Heart Health

Cancer Prevention

Cancer is a universal term for the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that spread beyond their normal boundaries, often invading other parts of the body. Lycopene is found in all forms of tomatoes and tomato products including fresh, tinned, paste, juice and ketchup. After studies it's unclear if lycopene can reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Further research is needed to say for sure whether lycopene can affect cancer risk. After research has found that tomatoes may help protect men from prostate cancer. The juicy red fruit can help protect the DNA in your cells from damage that can lead to cancer. Tomatoes contain a huge effective antioxidant called lycopene.

Skin Health

Tomatoes are considered beneficial for skin health. Tomato-based foods prosperous in lycopene and other plant compounds may protect against sunburn. Plant constituents such as carotenoids and flavonoids are involved in the light-protecting system in plants and contribute to the prevention of UV damage in humans. As micronutrients they are ingested with the diet and are distributed into light-exposed tissues where they provide systemic photo protection. beta-Carotene is an endogenous photo protector, and its efficacy to prevent UV-induced erythema formation has been demonstrated in intervention studies. Lycopene is the large carotenoid of the tomato and is a very efficient singlet oxygen quencher in the group of carotenoids. A while later ingestion of lycopene or tomato-derived products rich in lycopene, photo protective effects have been demonstrated. After couple weeks of intervention, a decrease in the sensitivity towards UV-induced erythema was observed in volunteers. Dietary carotenoids may contribute to life-long protection against harmful UV radiation.

This case new study builds on the theory that the phytochemicals in tomatoes are absorbed in the skin and protect against UV damage. Lycopene, the phytochemical that responsible tomatoes its red color, is part of a group of carotenoids well studied for its role in cancer prevention. The DIET study compared three groups of mice consuming different diets, all exposed to ultraviolet-B light. (UV-B light is the main cause of sunburns.) One group ate a standard diet. Next two groups ate a diet that included 10 percent either dehydrated red tomatoes or tangerine tomatoes.


According to DIET RICH “Daily tomato consumption appeared to cut the development of skin cancer tumors by half in a mouse study at The Ohio State University”. The new case study of how nutritional interventions can alter the risk for skin cancers appeared online in the journal Scientific Reports.

After research and study found that male mice fed a diet of 10 percent tomato powder daily for 35 weeks, then exposed to ultraviolet light, experienced, on average, a 50 percent decrease in body skin cancer tumors compared to mice that ate no dehydrated tomato. Here, many researchers were only looking at non-melanoma skin cancers, the most common cancer in the United States.
